The Swakopmund Museum was established in 1951 by dentist Dr Alfons Weber, who had a love for history and natural history. The Swakopmund Museum is the largest privately-run museum in Namibia. The exhibits include indigenous plants, animals, minerals, archaeological finds, old modes of transport in Namibia, and a variety of other interesting exhibitions. In the Swakopmund Museum you will also find artefacts that give you an insight into the culture of the Namibian people.
You can either explore the Museum on your own or book a guided tour. The guided tour needs to be booked in advance with the curator: Nadine.p@sciswk.com or 064 402046.
The Museum further hosts multiple events and public lectures. For more information please visit ourFacebook, or Instagram pages, or visit our events calendar. Additionally, you are invited to join our WhatsApp Broadcast Group by sending a WhatsApp to +264 64 402695, and/or join our mailing-list by sending an email to office@sciswk.com.
The Museum Shop is a must for book-lovers, postcard-writers and souvenir-shoppers. It has something for everyone, young and old. Need to send that postcard? No problem, the friendly cashiers got stamps for sale and will gladly help you locate our red historical post box to send it away.
Eleven young people, regular meetings, various projects, one mission: to make Namibia's heritage, history, culture as well as science, tangible - especially for the younger generation. The time had come in May 2025. The “Museum Ambassadors” project was launched and started with a pilot round. Eleven young people qualified from over 80 applicants to take on responsibility, be challenged and supported for a year. In addition to theoretical and practical inputs, workshops, free admission to the museum and teamwork experiences, the new Museum Ambassadors will have the opportunity to develop and organise their own projects such as exhibitions, theme days or events. The Museum Ambassadors would appreciate any support:
