Building a Sustainable Future for Mariculture: Recent Advances in China

Dr. Liqiang Zhao, Professor of Fisheries and Aquaculture at Guangdong Ocean University, China, will be undertaking an expert mission in Namibia over the next three months and is prepared to give a public presentation in the Swakopmund Museum Lecture Hall. Dr. Zhao is an internationally recognised expert in sustainable molluscan shellfish aquaculture, with extensive experience in oyster and clam production, selective breeding, shellfish health, climate-resilient aquaculture, environmentally sustainable farming systems, production optimisation and technology transfer. His work has focused on translating scientific research into practical solutions that improve shellfish production and promote sustainable aquaculture. We would like to offer this excellent opportunity to the broad public, but also members of the mariculture industry, researchers, students, government officials and conservation practitioners, to learn from Dr. Zhao's extensive international experience in sustainable molluscan shellfish aquaculture, climate resilience, and innovations in shellfish farming.

GO THEREFORE AND LEARN

31 July 2026 - 18:00

GO THEREFORE AND LEARN

"GO THEREFORE AND LEARN" is a documentary film that takes a critical look at missionary work in Namibia. Laudika yaNdangii and Daniela Fritz set out to search for clues, comb through archives, and talk to people throughout Namibia about the impact of the missionaries - up to the present day. The film uses partially animated archival footage and rarely seen photographs from Namibia's pre-colonial and colonial periods. The missionary work played a significant role in the country's colonization during the 19th century. Two young filmmakers from Namibia and Germany, Laudika yaNdangii and Daniela Fritz, share a common past: both were raised Christian, but today they have many critical questions and reservations, particularly regarding the spread of Christianity. Their countries are connected by a dark past – German missionaries are considered pioneers of the colony of German South West Africa, present-day Namibia. Laudika and Daniela embark on a joint search for clues in the present. Their journey takes them from Windhoek across Namibia and along the way they ask themselves and many others numerous questions. They meet the museum guides Maggy and Kleopas, the German archivist Werner, Timoteus, the first black headmaster of a former mission school, Marta and Adam, the elders of a village founded by missionaries, and last but not least, Muningandu, Hildegard, Lavinia and Lizette, a group of young activists and artists in whom Laudika and Daniela recognize their own critical perspective.
